Estados Unidos.- Ante el fuerte impacto de la pandemia de coronavirus/COVID-19 en Estados Unidos, muchos de los eventos tradicionales alrededor de la campaña presidencial fueron suspendidos o reducidos: las convenciones, los mítines, las recaudaciones de fondos, etcétera. Pero los debates presidenciales siguen en pie y así es como quedaron las fechas y las sedes.
Los debates entre los candidatos a la presidencia son eventos de suma importancia electoral y de máximo interés público ya que permiten a los dos principales actores de la contienda a medir sus propuestas uno contra el otro en la palestra.
Por supuesto, más allá de ser una plataforma para que los candidatos expongan sus agendas, los debates le ofrecen al electorado un vistazo a las personalidades de los contendientes en un ambiente de conflicto. Las reacciones rápidas, los gestos, el sentido del humor y las estocadas verbales pueden tener más peso que las propuestas y el proyecto de nación.
Este año, la crisis sanitaria ha puesto en duda varios de los elementos convencionales en los debates, como las audiencias en vivo, el formato de town hall en el segundo debate, e incluso las mismas sedes. Algunos de los anfitriones originales anunciaron su retiro a causa de la pandemia.
